Themes of discussion

I. CONTEXT

Many researchers emphasize that entrepreneurship can be taught and that entrepreneurial education is essential for developing an entrepreneurial mindset. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Report (2014), 79% of entrepreneurs admitted that higher education played an important part in their decision to set up their own business.

Entrepreneurship education among the young generation fosters important skills, behaviour and attitudes. The entrepreneurial spirit, which implies innovation and creativity, is considered to have an important role for the economic growth of a country, as well for the public and the private sector development.

The UNESCO Chairs Meeting “Challenges of Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Universities and Education in Europe within SDG-4” is a platform for discussions on how entrepreneurial education and higher education institutions can be not only relevant but inspiring and motivating.

Best practices, case studies and already implemented curricula within entrepreneurial education will represent the starting point of discussions.

“Education is a human right for all throughout life and that access must be matched by quality” – (UNESCO, 2017)

II. Objectives

The meeting aims to contribute to the fulfilment of the SDG Objectives 4.4 Relevant skills for decent work and 4.7 Education for sustainable development and global citizenship. With regard to 4.4., we strive to better support the increase of the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.

With regard to 4.7 we aim to encourage all learners to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, and the promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.

The specific objectives of this meeting are to:

  • Establish a network or consortium for sharing and exchanging  ideas and expertise to foster interdisciplinary entrepreneurial universities and education in Europe within SDG-4
  • Debate about the current challenges within higher education, regarding entrepreneurial education in different study areas: Technical science, agricultural science, medical science, social science, together with an interdisciplinary approach on education.
  • Conduct workshops on selected topics, e.g., collaborative research, innovative pedagogy, optimizing technology for networking
  • Showcase selected student enterprises
  • Develop specific, achievable and realistic factors and action plans
  • Research on the necessary ecosystem in order to sustain entrepreneurial education in higher education institutions.

III. Expected outcomes

This initiative was inspired by the activity of the UNESCO Entrepreneurship Education Network and the 6 UNESCO Meetings on Entrepreneurship Education, which took place between 2012 and2017 in Hangzhou, Bangkok, Jakarta, Bandung and Manilla.

Building on the results of these past meetings, we plan for the members of our European Meeting to enhance the quality of entrepreneurship education in their respective countries, emphasizing that entrepreneurship is a viable career path and equipping learners with the necessary information, tools and mindset in order to embrace an entrepreneurial / intrapreneurial way of acting in accordance with the SDG 4.

In particular we plan to:

  • Research and exchange ideas on the topic and develop a set of measures to raise the interdisciplinary approach within entrepreneurial education for sustainable development in higher education institutions, in order to successfully implement the Education 2030 Agenda;
  • Put together and publish a collection of scientific papers with regard to entrepreneurial education for sustainable development in higher education institutions in Europe including case-studies and best practice examples.

IV. Impact

  • The UNESCO Chairs Meeting “Challenges of Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Universities and Education in Europe within SDG-4” in Bucharest will have a strong impact through the development and adoption of a plan of measures, in order to support the Education 2030 Framework for Action, and a more efficient implementation of the interdisciplinary approach in the curriculum of quality entrepreneurial education for sustainable development.
  • The collection of scientific works underlining the necessity of an interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approach, with the goal of connecting science and society, together with knowledge exchange published subsequently, will represent a tool for the further development of new policies in order to help member states face the challenges through the implementation of sustainable development objectives in education.
