The UNESCO Chairs Meeting “Challenges of Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Universities and Education in Europe within SDG-4”, organized by the UNESCO Chair for Business Administration within the Faculty of Business Administration in foreign languages, The Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Romania, aims to bring together representatives of UNESCO departments specialized in Entrepreneurship, Education, Innovation and Sustainability, with other representatives of UNESCO departments interested in the proposed topic.

Many researchers emphasize that entrepreneurship can be taught and that entrepreneurial education is essential for developing an entrepreneurial mindset. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit Report (2014), 79% of entrepreneurs admitted that higher education played an important part in their decision to set up their own business.
Entrepreneurship education among the young generation fosters important skills, behaviour and attitudes. The entrepreneurial spirit, which implies innovation and creativity, is considered to have an important role for the economic growth of a country, as well for the public and the private sector development.
The UNESCO Chairs Meeting “Challenges of Interdisciplinary Entrepreneurial Universities and Education in Europe within SDG-4” is a platform for discussions on how entrepreneurial education and higher education institutions can be not only relevant but inspiring and motivating.
Best practices, case studies and already implemented curricula within entrepreneurial education will represent the starting point of discussions.

The meeting aims to contribute to the fulfilment of the SDG Objectives 4.4 Relevant skills for decent work and 4.7 Education for sustainable development and global citizenship. With regard to 4.4., we strive to better support the increase of the number of youth and adults who have relevant skills, including technical and vocational skills, for employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurship.
With regard to 4.7 we aim to encourage all learners to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, and the promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.

This initiative was inspired by the activity of the UNESCO Entrepreneurship Education Network and the 6 UNESCO Meetings on Entrepreneurship Education, which took place between 2012 and2017 in Hangzhou, Bangkok, Jakarta, Bandung and Manilla.
Building on the results of these past meetings, we plan for the members of our European Meeting to enhance the quality of entrepreneurship education in their respective countries, emphasizing that entrepreneurship is a viable career path and equipping learners with the necessary information, tools and mindset in order to embrace an entrepreneurial / intrapreneurial way of acting in accordance with the SDG 4.

Igor Kitaev is responsible for Education-related Interdisciplinary activities at the Regional UNESCO Bureau for Europe (Venice, Italy). He holds an Advanced Degrees with Honours in International Economics from the Moscow State University of International Relations (MGIMO), with a Major in government planning and finance of social sectors. He had an extensive lecturing and research career, in parallel with assignments within the UN system, such as the UN General Assembly (2nd (Economic) and 3rd (Social) Committees), ECOSOC, UNECE, the UN Commission for Social Development and the UN Committee for Programme and Coordination. He was a Member of the Steering and Drafting Committees of the Jomtien World Conference on Education for All (1990), before joining UNESCO in 1991 and following on programmes and projects related the MDG 2/SDG 4 (Education 2030) goals, targets and indicators. He conducted numerous research and capacity-development projects for Ministries of Education and Universities worldwide – included being a Visiting Professor at the Universities of London, Cologne, Stockholm, Poznan, Moscow, Turku, Valencia, Witwatersrand, and Paris-Sorbonne (e.g. Member of the Doctorate Jury). He contributed to academic and research publications in Oxford, McGraw-Hill/Education, OECD and UNICEF, as well as UNESCO, catalogued by the US Congress Library and the British Library.
Slavica Singer is Professor Emeritus of Entrepreneurship at the J.J. Strossmayer University in Osijek, Croatia. Her education involves university degree in economics (University of Zagreb), Master of Science degree in Management (Purdue University, Krannert Graduate School of Industrial Administration, U.S.A., 1972) and PhD degree in Economics (University of Zagreb, 1975). From 2006, she regularly (annually) participates in various trainings for lecturers of the Microeconomics of Competitiveness at the Harvard Business School. Her working experience started in the corporate sector (six years) and was followed by university career (from 1973 till retirement in 2012). In 2000 she and her team were pioneering in research-based entrepreneurship education in Croatia, by starting the first graduate program in entrepreneurship. In 2010, the doctoral program ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATIVENESS has been started, as a result of collaborative efforts of five universities (Osijek, Croatia; Turku, Finland; Maribor, Slovenia; Klagenfurt, Austria and Durham, UK). From 2002 she leads Croatian Global Entrepreneurship Monitor research team and she was a Board member of the Global Entrepreneurship Research Association (2010-2016). From 1996 Slavica was leading activities related to developing local and national entrepreneurship ecosystem (microfinance institution NOA, centers for entrepreneurship around Croatia, policy center for SMEs and entrepreneurship, university-based educational programs). In last 15 years she participated in various EU funded projects related to entrepreneurship education (on innovative teaching approaches, on evaluation tools in entrepreneurship education, on developing entrepreneurship competence framework). Besides her research and educational activities, Slavica is very much involved in microfinance activities in Croatia (for what she was trained by Professor Muhammad Yunus and his team at the Grameen Bank, Bangladesh). She is the member of the Croatian Competitiveness Council, Club of Rome – Croatian Chapter and the Board member of European Council of Small Business. Slavica is often engaged by the OECD as consultant/expert in the field of reviewing national policies on entrepreneurship and inclusivity. For her contributions to the development of university based entrepreneurship education, in 2008 she was awarded with the UNESCO Chair in Entrepreneurship Education, and in 2010 with the honorary doctorate by the University of Turku, Turku School of Economics.
Pierre Garello is Professor of Economics at the Faculté d’Economie et Gestion of Aix Marseille University in France. President of IES-Europe, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal des Économistes et des Études Humaines, a scholarly review dealing with economic, legal, philosophical and political issues, in the tradition of the French Classical Liberal School, he has published various articles on Austrian economics, law and economics (especially competition law and contract law). He is also at the center of a liberal network in Europe and is the coordinator of the European liberal think tank Resource Bank. He is directing research for IREF, a think tank that promotes tax competition and sound public finances.
Katrin Kohl is the Managing Director of the German Commission for UNESCO and also serves as an Executive Coordinator to the UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Education towards Sustainability at York University Toronto. She is a lawyer and holds an MBA in General Management with extensive experience in education management and strategy development in value-based institutions. With her great passion for the matters of education, Katrin has served in several administrative and management positions in the fields of Higher Education and other education institutions. Seldom found in management, she understands the motives and perspectives of educators and knows how to transform these ideas into business planning and execution in order to reorient organizations towards a sustainable future.
Constantin Bratianu is Professor Emeritus of Strategic Management and Knowledge Management, UNESCO Department for Business Administration, Faculty of Business Administration, Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Romania. He obtained a Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia, USA (1981), and a Ph.D. from Bucharest University of Economic Studies, Romania (2001). He was an Expert in the UNESCO National Commission of Romania (1993-1994), General Director for Higher Education in the Ministry of Education (1998-2000, and 2005), and Expert for Science and Education in the Romanian Parliament (2001). He was Head of the UNESCO Chair for Business Administration, Faculty of Business Administration, Bucharest University of Economic Studies (2008-2011), and the Director of the Research Center for Intellectual Capital (2007-2012). He was Visiting Professor in universities from USA, Japan, Egypt, Austria, Hungary and Poland. He is Editor of the international journal Management Dynamics in the Knowledge Economy, and Associate Editor of the Electronic Journal for Knowledge Management, and VINE Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems. His research interests are mainly in the domains of entrepreneurship, strategic management, and knowledge management. His presentation will be focused on Entrepreneurship education in the knowledge economy.
Christine Volkmann studied Economics at Gießen University (Germany). After having worked as a PhD research associate with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, she held several leading positions at Deutsche Bank. In 1999, Christine Volkmann was appointed Professor of Economics at the Westfälische Hochschule and managing director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Since 2008, Christine Volkmann holds the Chair of Entrepreneurship and Economic Development at the Schumpeter School of Business and Economics at Wuppertal University. She is director of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovations Research (IGIF). Her research and teaching activities focus on Social Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Ecosystem, Academic Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Leadership and International Entrepreneurship. She was twice awarded the “UNESCO Chair of Entrepreneurship and Intercultural Management”, 2005 at Westfälische Hochschule and 2010 at the Wuppertal University. She is committed to related initiatives such as the interdisciplinary Jackstädt Research Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation; a regular visiting professorship at the University of Economics and Business Administration (ASE) in Bucharest, Romania; the expert group tot he European Commission on entrepreneurship education in higher education, especialy in non business studies; the technical advisory group of the World Economic Forum for Education and Entrepreneurship among others.
Paolo Orefice, Professor Emeritus of Education (2012), is Chairholder of the UNESCO Transdisciplinary Chair Human Development and Culture of Peace of the University of Florence since 2006. He held various institutional roles in this University since 1990: Dean, Vice-Rector, Director of Doctoral School and of national and international Masters. Previously he taught Pedagogy at the University of Naples and Chieti. His main research topic – epistemological, theoretical and methodological – is the Local Theory of Education, based on the cognitive potential of feeling and thinking and aimed at building the emancipated knowledge of people and cultures for the intelligent democracy of Earth’s Humanism. The theory is articulated in open strategic models, developed through the transdisciplinary participatory action research. On these issues he has a long experience of inter-university exchanges and scientific direction of local, national, european and international projects. As Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair he leads the realization of the General Project (2017-2021) The historical challenge of the planetary civilization. Towards the Earth’s Humanism, in search of the co-science and co-grouth beyond violence. The Project is based on the Unesco Chair Transdisciplinary Knowledge Laboratory and School (UTKLab&School), which realize the specific research, education and integrated development projects in various countries, particularly in Latin America and Europe and, in last years, also whith Networks of african universities and associations. His publications, of which part abroad, are over three hundred and fifty. The UNESCO Department (Chair) for Business Administration was created in 1995 as a result of a convention between the UNESCO and the Bucharest University of Economic Studies (ASE) entitled, “Formation et Recherches Appliquées au Développement de l’Entreprise des Pays en Conversion Economique”. Since its establishment, it has dedicated its efforts and resources towards achieving the main UNESCO objectives through its educational programmes offered only in foreign languages, research projects, scientific events and other initiatives. At the university level, the UNESCO Department for Business Administration is part of the Faculty of Business Administration in Foreign Languages (FABIZ), ensuring more than 75% of the faculty members that teach in its study programmes. The FABIZ Bachelor and Master programmes are organized in such a manner to ensure a continuous, qualitative learning for all students, as well as to prepare them for the current and future labour market expectations. Curricula integrate both economic and business oriented subjects, as well as communication and information technology fields highly encountered in the daily jobs in multinational companies and in public or private organizations.
The National Committee of Romania for UNESCO (CNR UNESCO) foundation occurred at the same time with the adherence of Romania at the UNESCO Convention in 1956. The Committee is organised in 5 subcommittees, each being responsible for a specific field, respectively: the subcommittee for Education, the subcommittee for Culture, the subcommittee for Science, the subcommittee for Communication and Information, and the subcommittee for Interdisciplinary programmes.
In the educational field the two main objectives of the CNR UNESCO are “promoting strategies contributing to achieving an inclusive and qualitative educational system for all and supporting the European lifelong learning system mentioned in the “Memorandum Strategy LLL”. Further specific objectives refer to (CNR UNESCO, 2016):
The exchanges of professors, researchers and students with other Universities and University networks from Europe and other regions of the world are supported by several UNESCO Chairs of Universities under the framework of the University Twinning and Networking Programme (UNITWIN) (CNR UNESCO, 2016).
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), that are directly linked to the UNESCO objectives, are: quality education; gender equality; affordable and clean energy; decent work and economic growth; industry, innovation and infrastructure; reduced inequalities; sustainable cities and communities; responsible consumption and production; climate action; life below water; life on land; peace, justice and strong institutions; partnerships for the goals; no poverty; zero hunger; good health and well-being (UN, 2017).

This thesis investigates different perspectives of corporate social entrepreneurship as a transformational innovation tool, market development tool and local development tool, meant to help business owners to better incorporate socially responsible principles in their business operations. The research is expected to contribute to existing knowledge in the field by identifying three corporate social entrepreneurship strategies.
The purpose of this thesis was to get involved in the global dialogue concerning university entrepreneurship by studying a very specific population (social sciences academia) in a very specific context (Romania) and to identify the ways in which the insights garnered from this particular case study can be integrated into the international flow of knowledge related to academic entrepreneurship. The relevance of the study comes from the existence of an entrepreneurial turn inside today’s universities and from the need to rearrange the knowledge concerning the values, norms, motivations, products and impact of higher education in the light of this new development.
This thesis investigates multiple conceptions and definitions of social entrepreneurship using an extensive review of the literature on social entrepreneurship, social entrepreneur, social responsibility, commercial entrepreneurship, social enterprise and last but not least, social entrepreneurship in universities. In this study, the dimensions of commercial versus social entrepreneurship are investigated, the factors explaining social responsibility and social entrepreneurial behaviour are explored, and the similarities and differences between social and commercial enterprises are inquired. Also, the drivers promoting and shaping social entrepreneurship are identified. A specific focus is given to explaining the role of social entrepreneurship in higher education. This is based on the argument that specialized literature is very poor in this area, even though this new model of social entrepreneurship is becoming very necessary.
This thesis has sought to bring its own contribution to the development of female entrepreneurship by providing useful insights in regards to the way in which female entrepreneurs understand and create innovation. The thesis has focused on the particularities of the innovation process in the creative industries and has taken event planning businesses as a case study. The focus on this particular business sector which is not normally associated with the creative industries has helped us shed light on how creativity and innovation are transformed into products and services that create customer value by female entrepreneurs and on the numerous challenges that these entrepreneurs face in their daily business activities.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the possibilities of creating online social value in the online environment of a very specific set of hotels in a particular location (Romania). The topic of this thesis has been chosen due to the ever-increasing reliance of travel customers on digital tools, so it seemed like a perfect moment to investigate the digital environment of the hotel industry and to find within this environment hotspots that can deliver social value to the customers.

The objective of this project was to develop a study module on social entrepreneurship with a scope of 15 ECTS. The format of delivery is flexible (both online and blended learning modes) in order to address different target groups. In terms of content, the project adapts and complements existing learning resources, both national and European, and provides new materials derived from the partners’ local contexts. In addition, experiences made during development and pilot implementation feeds into a guidance report for teaching staff. The project is addressed to an interdisciplinary target group of educators, students and young professionals in the fields of economics, business administration, geography, agriculture, regional development, urban/ landscape planning and involves partners from different European regions. A carefully conceived combination of online activities with international project/field work allows for addressing different types of learners depending on the intensity to which they are able to commit themselves to the course.

The project will develop, implement and test a new approach to promote creativity, entrepreneurial thinking and skills for designing innovation in close cooperation with the communities in which the partner-universities are embedded. This will be achieved by two core activities: (1) The ‘Community Innovation Labs’ will provide a transdisciplinary framework for students, teachers and the community to collaborate on issues that really matter locally. The labs will allow for a multi-faceted understanding of what the local challenges are and thus provide students with a realistic analysis of the change potential. Social entrepreneurship is the guiding principle here, aiming at merging social, environmental and economic sustainability. (2) The project will expand an existing online course on Social Entrepreneurship with a new component focussing on the start-up phase. This will happen in synergy with the ‘community innovation labs’ as starting points for co-creation and co-founding.
New Educational Programs in the Field of Entrepreneurship at the UNESCO Department for Business Administration

Also, the UNESCO Department for Business Administration has successfully developed a specialized Master programme dedicated to the energy sector, The Energy Master of Business Administration (http://mba-energie.ase.ro/), covering the main business and social responsibility aspects of the energy market today.
This program continues the tradition of promoting entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Business Administration in Foreign Languages. The first courses of Entrepreneurship Culture were introduced as a result of the collaboration with the UNESCO Department of Entrepreneurship at University of Applied Science Gelsenkirchen in 2005. The Energy Master of Business Administration curriculum, which was developed in 2013, is fully oriented towards the entrepreneurship and business issues of sustainability and the latest energy and renewable energy market developments, challenges and changing strategies.
The Energy Master of Business Administration curriculum is fully oriented towards the business issues of sustainability and the latest energy and renewable energy market developments, challenges and changing strategies. The Master programme comprises subjects such as: Energy Policy and the Environment, the Energy Market and Trading, Social Responsibility in Energy Enterprises, Renewable Energy and Climate Change, that offer not only business oriented information, but also raise the concern and the importance of applying ethical principles, technological progress and social and corporate responsibility measures in order to preserve the natural environment for future generations.
The programme offers a broad overview of the current energy system and markets, combined with emphasis on the need for energy efficiency and sustainability principles in order to reach economic goals, while also considering the environment and the people (people, planet, profit or the triple bottom line). Furthermore, the programme advances a close cooperation with professionals from the energy field, such as: Ion Lungu, Director of CEZ Trade (www.cez.ro) and President of the Association of Electricity Suppliers in Romania, Valeriu Binig, one of the most prominent specialists in the energy field, Partner at Ernst & Young at the department of Business Consultancy with focus on the energy field, Radu Dudău, Director of Energy Policy Group and many others. These experts ensure the cooperation with the private sector and provide the update of the latest trends in the energy sector, both nationally and globally.
Professors from this master program have started to publish their courses internationally. Three prominent book examples are: Entrepreneurship and Business Development in the Energy Sector (IGI Global, 2018); Business Models for Renewable Energy Initiatives (IGI Global, 2017); Doing Business in Europe (Springer, 2018).
In 2016, The MBA Programme Entrepreneurship and Business Administration in Energy was co-organizer of the long lasting International Conference on Business Excellence (ICBE 2016 – 10th edition) that was held for the first time in Bucharest. The following editions, 11th, 12th and 13th (that is taking place in 2019) promoted and still continue to promote the topic of energy by having a dedicated minitrack on Energy, Climate Change and Sustainability.
The curricula and syllabi for all FABIZ educational programmes are reviewed annually in collaboration with partners from the socio-economic environment to better match the labour market requirements. The Bachelor and Master programmes are offered in three international languages: English, French and German. This ensures a significant strength for graduates in what regards mastering not only business related concepts and applications, but also at least one of the three foreign languages.

The 2012 European Union publication “Building Entrepreneurial Mindsets and Skills in the EU” sets out a dual approach to entrepreneurship education (McMurtry, 2013):
In order to better focus on these two directions for a higher education institution’s point of view, a brief snapshot of the entrepreneurial activity in Romania bases on GEM data. For Central and Eastern European countries (CEE) which started their transition to the market economy after the fall of the communism, the entrepreneurial endeavor started with the negative legacy (Estrin et al., 2006) of the former planned economy. Many policy makers considered the setup of new enterprises as being the most important routes to create the private sector after the fall of socialist regimes (Kornai, 1990). However, the entrepreneurship development in the CEE countries was uneven. Romania was a laggard in creating the private sector compared with the other CEE countries, especially Visegrad countries (Dumitru and Dumitru, 2017). Dumitru and Dumitru (2017) showed that for newly registered companies, Romania had one of the lowest business density rates among the CEE countries during the transition period.
In Romania the shares of people saying that entrepreneurship is a good career choice, that there is a high status of successful entrepreneurs, and that media is reporting positively entrepreneurship stories are the highest among CEE countries and higher than the European average.
In Romania the share of self-perceived entrepreneurial opportunities is the highest among CEE countries but still lower than the European average (table 2). At the same time, in terms of perceived capabilities, Romania’s position is worse than Poland, Croatia, and Slovakia. In terms of fear of failure, the percentage of people saying that the fear of failure would constraint them from starting a business is higher in Romania than in Bulgaria, Croatia, Slovakia or the European average, but lower than in Poland and slightly lower than in Hungary. Also, the share of people intending to start a business is the highest in Romania.
In brief, Romanians see opportunities and want to start businesses, but, on the other hand, they have doubts regarding their capabilities to embark on an entrepreneurial journey and the fear of failure is very high.
This is the challenge for the business schools: to better link the self-perceived opportunities and the desires to become an entrepreneur with the capabilities necessary for the creation and management of the business; to help build that mindset where there isn’t just a high fear of failure, where failure, if appears, is seen as a useful learning experience.

Student’s Society for Entrepreneurship

The Bucharest University of Economic Studies has decided to become an engaged university concerned about development. It plays an important role as partner of regional stakeholders and it is an active promoter of regional development. As such, the university promotes and supports entrepreneurial projects for developing the region and delivering solutions for a better life quality and economic growth. In the past 10 years, the Bucharest University of Economic Studies was the leader of more than 12 national and international projects, financed by means of European Funds, focusing on entrepreneurship and its various facets: intrapreneurship, social entrepreneurship, small business entrepreneurship or start-up entrepreneurship.
The Student’s Society for Entrepreneurship was founded in 2017 with the scope of developing the entrepreneurial culture and supporting entrepreneurship projects within the Bucharest University of Economic Studies. The main goals are: bring together all the forces interested in economic development and entrepreneurship: state authorities, universities, the industry, students; create a friendly environment for developing the entrepreneurial behavior of students; create a mind-set for searching opportunities, self-employment, and a positive attitude towards entrepreneurship. So far, the Student’s Society for Entrepreneurship has organized: work-shops, seminars, contests for business ideas/business projects (GoBiz) that ended with a boot-camp meant to assist the students enhance their business idea, common projects with the industry, projects financed by European Funds – financing start-ups with 25.000€-40.000€. Students interested in developing business ideas have access to the infrastructure of the society by using computers, software, and electronic resources and other useful materials for a building a start-up.
Regarding the SDG’s of UNESCO our department responses to the SDG No.9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation by supporting technology development through student’s scientific projects (e.g. students from business administration work together with students from cybernetics department) and delivering solutions for economic growth.
Summer Schools and Other Projects

In the quest of contributing to the “partnership for goals” of SDGS, FABIZ organizes three summer schools that stand for the international recognition of our faculty. Several research projects and partnerships have been completed through these programmes. One of the longest standing summer schools in our university is the “Summer School for Entrepreneurship and German Language” (http://www.scoaladegermana.ro/), which offers the possibility of studying both German and Entrepreneurship with native speakers from Germany or Austria, while also developing their social and communication skills. The Summer School in French, L’ecole Francaise (http://scoaladefranceza.eu/scoala-de-franceza-2017/cand-si-unde/) aims at enhancing awareness about our faculty and at gathering and forming a pool of potential candidates for ensuring the sustainability of the faculty.
Furthermore, the English Summer School “How to Manage Change – Challenges of Globalisation – The Digitisation Revolution” (http://fabiz.ase.ro/summer-school-2018/) represents the liaison between the foreign and domestic students, foreign universities and the business environment. This summer school welcomes guest-speakers from multiple prestigious universities in Europe (so far) and international companies and organisations (P&G, E&Y, OMV Petrom, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, etc.) has contributed to intensifying the inflow of foreign students and to ensuring a top position for our university in international rankings. Moreover, a further objective of the summer school was represented by establishing strategic partnerships that were concluded with the universities represented by the guest-speakers (Strasbourg University, Sapienza University of Rome, Rotterdam University, etc.). As a conclusion the mission of this summer school is aligned to the internationalisation strategy of our university. These are FABIZ projects dedicated to the goal of expanding social and professional knowledge of students and other participants and they contribute to expanding the “partnerships for goals” objective.
The FABIZ scientific programmes and curricula also support the objective of “increasing the communication and contact between the students as future employees and employers”. In order to ensure a practical approach of the strategy for reaching these objectives, FABIZ organised multiple company presentations sessions, internships, field visits, as well as national competitions. The L’Oreal competitions 2015, 2016, and 2017 are worthy to be mentioned since FABIZ students competed against students from other universities on a given business assignment and made it to the finals. In the 2015 Edition, the FABIZ student team qualified for the international stage of the contest, namely L’Oreal Brandstorm Paris competition. FABIZ students have also achieved remarkable results at the P&G international competitions in 2014 and 2015. These latest two UNESCO objectives correspond with two of the 17 SDGs objectives, respectively “a quality education” and “a decent workplace and economic growth”.
Through all these results, as well as through the permanent efforts of adapting to the current requirements of the national and international business and scientific environment, the FABIZ UNESCO Department for Business Administration has fulfilled and contributed to the UNESCO educational and sustainability objectives. Also, it pursues the direction of qualitative lifelong learning and improvement for all its members. Furthermore, all these activities (curricula-related and extra-activities) support the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and indirectly they contribute to achieving the last five sustainable objectives (“zero hunger”, “zero poverty”, “gender equality”, “reduced inequalities”, “peace, justice and strong institutions”).

Given the wave of new technologies and trends disrupting business models and the changing division of labour between workers and machines transforming current job profiles, in the next five years, the skills required to perform most jobs will have shifted significantly. By 2022, no less than 54% of all employees will require significant re- and upskilling (WEF – The Future of Jobs Report, 2018). Skills continuing to grow in prominence by 2022 include analytical thinking and innovation as well as active learning and learning strategies. Sharply increasing importance of skills such as technology design and programming highlights the growing demand for various forms of technology competency identified by employers surveyed for this report. Proficiency in new technologies is only one part of the 2022 skills equation, however, as ‘human’ skills such as creativity, originality and initiative, critical thinking, persuasion and negotiation will likewise retain or increase their value, as will attention to detail, resilience, flexibility and complex problem-solving. Emotional intelligence, leadership and social influence as well as service orientation also see an outsized increase in demand relative to their current prominence (WEF – The Future of Jobs Report, 2018).
The main purpose of the workshop is to understand what universities can do, together with companies, government and local communities, to manage the skills gaps widened by the adoption of new technologies.

The five teams formed by UNESCO experts, faculty staff, business community representatives and doctoral students will discuss and present the conclusions reached by each team. The end results will highlight the main innovative teaching methods and tools based on technology as means of conveying knowledge and developing competencies in the light of the newly emerged skills: field research, interviews with customers, local communities and business owners, landscape research, (virtual/online) role plays, augmented reality, business simulations, etc.
